[Also in Division H2] Control mechanism for moving signs of the kind in which electric lamps arranged in a fixed field are selectively illuminated to provide travelling words or other information comprises self-adhesive metal foil symbols 82 fixed on an endless band 18 moved under a bank of plunger contacts 38 (see Division H2) mounted in rows (Fig. 2, not shown) in insulating carriers 36 arranged around a drum 14 (Fig. 1, not shown). A motor 41 drives the belt 18 by means of a roller 26, and a brake 24 ensures that the band 18 lies tightly in a groove 16 in drum 14. The plunger contacts 38 are each connected to a respective lamp and a further plunger contact 42 is provided at the end of each transverse row (Fig. 2, not shown). The plungers 42 provide common feed connections to the symbols 82, each of which has a co-operating strip 84 (Fig. 3) lying outside the letter-forming part of the symbol. The strips 84 extend beyond the width of the symbols so that the connection to a plunger 42 is made before or broken after that to plungers 38, thereby avoiding spark damage due to the total current from a plurality of lamps being controlled by the single plunger 42. Symbols having two legs, for example A and R, may have a strengthening strip 88 lying outside the path of plungers 38.</p> |
