Provided is a backlight unit that is suitable for cost reduction and frame width reduction as well as for suppressing the occurrence of uneven luminance. This backlight unit (50) is for emitting light to a liquid crystal panel (10) and is equipped with multiple LED elements (35) and a light guide plate (30). The light guide plate (30) has a display section (32) where the light is emitted to the display area (60) of the liquid crystal panel (10) and a non-display section (31) that corresponds to the non-display area (62) positioned around the display area (60) of the liquid crystal panel (10). The end face of the non-display section (31) of the light guide plate (30) constitutes an incident plane (36) for the light from the multiple LED elements (35), and the thickness (T) of the non-display section (31) with the incident plane (36) decreases with proximity to the incident plane (36).
