In a pair of hydraulic multi-disc clutches 14, 15 for driving the pinions 17, 19 of a changespeed or reverse gear, a continuous flow of low pressure liquid is maintained through the double actuator chambers 31, 35 and 32, 36 through passages 46, 45 when the clutches are disengaged, the clutches being engaged selectively by supplying high pressure liquid to either actuator through passages 49, 50 or 61, 62. As shown a pump 90 supplies the high pressure liquid to a pipe 91 from which it may be fed by a selector valve 92 to either of two feed pipes 87, 88 connected to passages 49, 61, respectively, the low pressure liquid being fed to pipes 94, 99 connected to passage 46 after exhausting from a torque converter 11. The low pressure liquid fed to passage 45 passes through metering passages in a central fixed reaction member 24 and opens valve discs 58, 68 to allow the liquid to flow through passages 50, 49 and 62, 61 to pipes 87, 88 and exhaust. To engage clutch 15 selector valve 92 is moved to the left to feed the high pressure liquid through pipes 91, 87 and passages 49, 50 to chamber 36 thereby moving the piston assembly 29, 30 to the right against release springs 40. Liquid passes through the metering passages in reaction member 24 into chamber 32, valves 58, 68 remaining open. As the volume of chamber 32 increases the liquid supply thereto is derived chiefly from the low pressure pipe 99 thereby securing rapid clutch engagement. When the clutch is engaged the pressure rise in chamber 32 closes valve 68 and the pressure then rises to its maximum engaging value, chamber 31 having remained connected to exhaust. Upon centring valve 92 to release clutch 15, chamber 32 is reconnected to exhaust and the low pressure liquid flow restored, valve 68 reopened, and flow to both chambers 31, 32 commenced to re-centre piston assembly 29, 30. For engagement of clutch 14 valve 92 is moved to the right, to connect pipes 91, 88 and passages 61, 62 to chamber 31 and thus move piston assembly 29, 30 to the left and close valve 58.
