The method involves testing whether speech signals exist. The speech signals are processed by a speech recognition device (6) during existence of the speech signals. A functional unit i.e. display device (5), of a motor car is controlled based on the speech signals. The speech recognition device is continually activated during operation of the car such that the testing process is continuously done. A number and/or a sequence of menu items displayed on the display device are varied based on the speech signals. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for assisting an operating person during operating functional units of a motor car.
