<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for removing sulfur from a heavy oil such as a normal pressure residual oil without using expensive hydrogen, and to provide a catalyst used therefor. <P>SOLUTION: In this method for removing sulfur from a heavy oil such as a normal pressure residual oil by using an iron oxide-based catalyst containing Zr and Al under a steam atmosphere without using expensive hydrogen, the catalyst is preferably one prepared by a coprecipitation method from aqueous solution of an Fe salt, an Al salt and a Zr salt, and further a Zr content in the catalyst is preferably ≤20 wt.% in terms of ZrO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
