The invention relates to a lifting device for mounting a rotor on the drive train of a wind turbine, the rotor comprising a hub, rotor blades fastened to the hub and receiving means fixed to the hub. The lifting device is designed as a self-closing lifting tong, said lifting tong having a first lever and a second lever which are interconnected via a pivot. At least the first lever is subdivided into a tension arm and a gripping arm by virtue of the arrangement of the pivot, the tension arm, comprising a hitching point for a cargo lifter, e.g. a crane. The second lever comprises at least one gripping arm. An end section of the two gripping arms is designed as a fastening means so that the end sections of the gripping arms can engage in a receiving means in a hub of the rotor when the rotor is mounted. Furthermore, the geometry of the first lever, the second lever, the pivot and the hitching point is chosen such and they are arranged relative each other such that, owing to the effect of the weight force of the rotor, a form-locking and/or friction-locking connection can be produced between the lifting device and the rotor, the connection being effective in a position of lift, in a position of mounting and in an intermediate position.
