The ultrasound image-generating apparatus (100), which generates a cross-sectional image (205) of a specified cross-section of a subject from multiple ultrasound images (201) obtained by scanning the subject with an ultrasound probe (101) from multiple directions, is provided with: a cross-section position-designating unit (111) that acquires cross-section information (202) representing the position and orientation of the specified cross-section; a position information-acquiring unit (110) that acquires position information (203) comprising the position and orientation in the subject of each of the multiple ultrasound images (201); a reference image-selecting unit (196) that selects, as a reference image, an ultrasound image from the multiple ultrasound images (201) for which the distance to the specified cross-section is less than a first threshold value and the difference in orientation from said specified cross-section is less than a second threshold value; and a cross-sectional image-generating unit (197) that generates a cross-sectional image (205) using the reference image.
