<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of using a xeno-free, chemically defined surface for cell culture which provides cell attachment and functionality comparable to a collagen coated surface. <P>SOLUTION: A method for attaching cells to the surface includes covering the surface with a compound comprising amino acid sequence GPCGPPGPPGPPGPPGPPGFX<SB POS="POST">1</SB>GERGPPGPPGPPGPPGPPGPC, wherein X<SB POS="POST">1</SB>represents hydroxyproline, and incubating the cells under conditions suitable for cell culture.
