A scroll-operated chuck has scroll plates 4, 5 engaging opposite ends of the jaws 3 and the scroll plates are rotated by a sleeve 8 which is connected to the plates by a differential device that allows them a certain degree of rotation relative to each other so that the jaws can be adjusted to grip a conical surface over their whole length. The differential device may comprise one or more gears 19 journalled in the centre of the sleeve and connected to the scroll plates through gearing 21 ... 24 or may comprise a number of levers centrally pivoted on the sleeve with their ends engaging slots in the plates. |
