Sealing means for a shaft 1 extending through a wall 9 between two chambers 2, 3, at different gas pressures, comprises a sleeve 4 which surrounds the shaft with a clearance 5 and is sealed to the wall by a flexible collar 12, means, for example rollers 6, to keep the sleeve coaxial with the shaft, and means to supply sealing liquid under pressure to the clearance 5. The roller spindles 7 are secured to the sleeve and the collar 12 is secured by rings 13 and 14 to flanges 11 and 10 on the sleeve and the wall 9 respectively. The gas pressure in chamber 3 is higher than that in chamber 2. Sealing liquid, e.g. oil, is supplied to the clearance 5 through a conduit 15 connected to a distributer 23 having a cylinder 25 supplied with pressure oil through a conduit 30. Pistons 24 and 32 interconnected by a rod 31 are subjected to the oil pressure in the conduit 15 and the gas pressure in chamber 3 respectively. The piston 24 controls an aperture 26 to supply oil to the conduit 15 and is biased to open the aperture by the gas pressure in chamber 3 acting on the end of piston 32 and a counterweight 36 tending to move the piston 32 upwards. Oil passing along the shaft 1 to the chambers 2 and 3 is collected in rings 16 and 18 respectively; that in ring 16 flowing to a recovery tank (not shown) and that in ring 18 passing to a tank 20 having a discharge valve 21 controlled by a float 22. If the pressure in chamber 3 falls to substantially that in chamber 2 the supply of oil to the clearance 5 is cut off by the piston 24.</p> |
