To produce a single-thread lock-stitch seam comprising on one side of the work double stitches spaced from one another and on the other side continuous single stitches, an unthreaded needle 10, Fig. 3, having an eye 12 closable by a sliding latch 13, is passed downwardly, with its eye open and at a stitch length from a previously formed stitch 21, through the work 15. A horizontal position 24 of thread extending between hooks 22, 23 on its passage from stitch 21 to the bobbin 19 of a rotary looptaker 18 thus enters eye 12. The needle with its eye closed is then moved upwardly to carry the doubled thread through the work, the hooks 22, 23 successively releasing the thread and the latter forming a single strand on the lower surface of the work. The work then moves forward another stitch length,and the needle descends to carry the thread through the work, Fig. 6, a finger 30 temporarily engaging the thread above the work to prevent the thread from fouling the needle point. The needle on commencing to reascend throws a, loop 26, Fig. 8, which is then engaged by the beak 27 of the looptaker. Latch 13 opens the eye 12 and the beak 27 removes the loop 26 from the latter and carries it around the bobbin, which the needle re-ascends through the work, Fig. 10. Finally, hook 22 engages the thread and exerts a pull thereon to set the stitch 25 comprising two strands on the upper surface of the work and one strand on the lower surface.
