A fire alarm system particularly for use in aeroplanes comprises a series circuit including warning lamps, 27, 28 arranged to light only a finite time after the occurrence of an alarm condition, a temperature detector of the type disclosed in Specification 961,143 including a normally open pressure operated switch 11 and the power supply in the form of a transformer secondary 16, the arrangement being that under normal conditions the resistance 12 connected across switch 11 is included in the series circuit and limits the current in the circuit to a value less than necessary to light lamps 27, 28 but on the temperature exceeding a fixed level, switch 11 is closed thereby shortcircuiting resistance 12 so that the current through the circuit becomes sufficient to light the lamps. A number of detectors including pressure sensitive switches may be connected in parallel (Fig. 2, not shown). The circuit may be immersed in an electrolyte e.g. salt water. It is stated that in this case short circuiting of terminals 30, 31 and false alarms due to this are prevented by the "passivation" i.e. the rapid build up of a high resistance film or the forming of gas bubbles on the terminals due to the relatively large current across the short. By connecting switch contact 38 to either of contacts 34, 37 the high and low sides of the circuit respectively will be earthed purposely and the lamps will light if the low and high sides of the circuits are earthed respectively.
