The cleaner (1) has a drive unit that generates a suction air stream. A separator device is arranged between a vacuum attachment and the drive unit. A control unit (15) is provided to influence an input power to the drive unit as a manipulated variable to control the suction power at the vacuum attachment as the controlled variable so that the suction power at the vacuum attachment is controllable at a predefined level. An independent claim is included for method for operating vacuum cleaner.
