A method of operating a motor vehicle (10, Figure 3) com­prising an internal combustion engine (110, Figure 3) coupled to a transmission (15, Figure 3) by means of an electrically actuated clutch (16, Figure 3). A clutch pedal (17, Figure 3) and a clutch-pedal position sensor (103, Figure 3) for generating a reference signal Si(t) representative of the position of the clutch pedal (17). The method comprises starting the internal combus­tion engine (110) if a gear of the transmission (15) is engaged and the reference signal Si(t) is indicating engaging the clutch (16). Calculating the change rate (CR, Figure 5) of the reference signal Si(t) during the starting phase; determining a control signal (S2(t), Figure 5) by filtering the reference signal Si(t). If the change rate (CR) exceeds a threshold value (thi, Figure 5) and applying the control signal (S2(t)) to the electrically actuated clutch (16) to operate the engagement of the electrically actuated clutch (16).
