PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical semiconductor device, to which a first optical waveguide and a second optical waveguide, which are capable of being manufactured by an inexpensive exposure device such as a contact exposure device or a projection exposure device and include a luminescence or optical amplification function, are connected optically. SOLUTION: The optical semiconductor device includes a first semiconductor optical waveguide having a first core layer formed of a first semiconductor layer, a second semiconductor layer which buries the side surface of the first semiconductor optical waveguide, an electrode formed on the first semiconductor optical waveguide and a second semiconductor optical waveguide having a second core layer formed of a third semiconductor layer with a band gap wavelength shorter than that of the first semiconductor layer while being connected optically to the first semiconductor optical waveguide. The second semiconductor layer buries part of the side surface of the second semiconductor optical waveguide beyond a boundary between the first semiconductor optical waveguide and the second semiconductor waveguide while the electrode is extended between the boundary and the end of the second semiconductor layer which buries the side surface of the second semiconductor optical waveguide.
