PURPOSE: A servo following control system and a method of a wire electrical discharge machine are provided to perform a discharge while optically maintaining a gap between a workpiece and wire because if the number of discharge times per unit time is a predetermined amount or greater, a pause state is maintained. CONSTITUTION: A servo following control system comprises a discharge voltage detection unit(100), a discharge voltage smoothing unit(200), a discharge starting detection unit(300), a discharge counter unit(400), a servo forward and backward judgment unit(500), and a servo motor controlling unit(600). The discharge voltage detection unit detects a voltage applied between a workpiece and wire. The discharge voltage smoothing unit makes a voltage waveform detected form the discharge voltage detection unit smooth and samples the smoothed gap voltages per each unit time. The discharge starting detection unit detects a discharged current through a discharging wire. The discharge counter unit counts the number of discharge pulses detected by the discharge starting detection unit. The servo forward and backward judgment unit decides a forward movement or backward movement of the discharging wire. The servo motor controller controls a servo motor, thereby moving the discharging wire forward or backward according to commands of the servo forward and backward judgment unit.
