A carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal system (10) includes first and second sorbent beds (14A,14B), a heat exchange system (16) and means for reducing pressure (22). The sorbent beds (14A,14B) each have a solid amine sorbent (26) for adsorbing and desorbing CO 2 . At a given time, one of the sorbent beds (14A) adsorbs CO 2 and the other sorbent bed (14B) desorbs CO 2 . The heat exchange system (16) cools the CO 2 adsorbing bed (14A) and heats the CO 2 desorbing bed (14B) so that the temperature of the CO 2 desorbing bed (14B) is greater than the temperature of the CO 2 adsorbing bed (14A). The means for reducing pressure (22) reduces CO 2 pressure at the CO 2 desorbing bed (14B). A method for removing CO 2 includes supplying a gas stream to a sorbent bed (14A) containing a solid amine sorbent (26) to adsorb CO 2 , reducing pressure at another sorbent bed (14B) to desorb CO 2 , heating the CO 2 desorbing bed (14B), cooling the CO 2 adsorbing bed, (14A) and removing CO 2 from the CO 2 desorbing bed (14B). |
