The device has control valves electrically controlled in accordance with operating parameters e.g. vehicle and engine speed, of a motor vehicle and a selector. An electromagnetically actuated locking element (28) holds a ratchet pawl in a driven state and in a laying position while defining an operating condition of the motor vehicle. A hydraulically operated self-holding valve (40) is integrated in a hydraulic drive controller (10) that maintains controlled system pressure during pressurization of a parking brake actuator (14) and/or during laying-out of a parking brake.
