FIELD: information technology. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a communication system using Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and particularly apparatus and method for channel encoding/decoding in order to generate LDPC codes with different lengths of the codeword and different coding speeds from the LDPC code, given in higher-order modulation. In the encoding method, the modulation scheme for transmitting symbols is determined; the shortening pattern is determined based on the determined modulation scheme; columns corresponding to the information word in the parity-check matrix of the LDPC code are grouped into a plurality of column groups; the column groups are ordered; the range of the resultant word, which is desirably obtained by shortening the information word, is determined; based on the range of the resultant information word, group after group in the ordered column groups of the information word are shortened according to the shortening pattern; and LDPC encoding is performed over the shortened information word. ^ EFFECT: high efficiency of channel encoding and decoding in a communication system using LDPC codes. ^ 37 cl, 18 dwg, 3 tbl |
