Oxidized polyethylene having improved adhesive properties is made by treating particulate polyethylene of melt index substantially 0.0 with an oxygen-containing gas or vapour (e.g. air) at a temperature between 100 DEG C. and the melting point, to form a product having a melt index of 0.1 to 1,000 and a ratio of per cent carbonyl to the square root of the melt index greater than 0.08. The polyethylene used may be of the high density type and the invention may also be applied to copolymers of ethylene with propylene or butene. Oxidation, which may be accelerated by u.v. light, may be terminated with N-phenyl-2-naphthyl-amine or by cooling. The products find application in laminated products, as film and moulded structures, and in paper coatings, floor waxes, car polishes and printing inks.
|
