The method involves applying diagnostic electrodes (120) with a defined signal sequence e.g. continuous signal sequence. A reply signal is detected at response electrodes (122). A sensor element is provided with solid body electrolytes (116) and electrodes (118). The electrodes are provided with the diagnostic and the response electrodes. The sensor element is connected with a pre-combustion chamber (140) acting upon with gas from a gas measuring chamber (112). A pump cell (144) is provided in the pre-combustion chamber and/or another gas measuring chamber (142) to remove a gas component. An independent claim is also included for a sensor device for detecting a portion of a gas component in a gas measuring chamber.
