<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a sludge reduction effect by promoting the proliferation of microorganisms effective for reducing sludge in a sludge reduction tank for receiving the excess sludge from a biological treatment tank to make the microorganisms prey on it. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for biologically treating organic wastewater, the organic wastewater is introduced to the biological treatment tank 1 and subjected to activated sludge treatment, biologically treated water is subjected to solid-liquid separation, a part of the solid-liquid separated sludge is returned to the biological treatment tank 1, a part of the sludge and/or the solid-liquid separated sludge in the biological treatment tank 1 is removed, and the removed sludge is introduced to a sludge reduction tank 3 and subjected to oxidation treatment under aerobic conditions, thereby reducing the sludge.
