<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved ultrasound imaging system and method for guiding an instrument, such as a needle guide. <P>SOLUTION: The ultrasound imaging system 100 includes: an ultrasound probe 106; a first sensor 122 attached to the ultrasound probe 106; a second sensor 124 attached to an instrument; a display device 118; and a processor 116. The processor 116 is configured to control the ultrasound probe 106 to acquire ultrasound data, the ultrasound data including data of a plane defined along a longitudinal axis of the instrument.
