<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of managing information about a large number of tape cassettes, while restraining a unit price (cost) of the tape cassettes. <P>SOLUTION: The tape cassette includes an index part for indicating kind information, and an identification part for indicating individual information. The index part and the identification part are detected in main processing of the printer. The printer determines whether a calculated tape residual amount is smaller than a tape carriage amount required for printing or not (S33, S37), when a print history displayed on a display is selected (S31:YES), or when a printing data is input directly (S35:YES). Printing processing is executed (S39), when the tape residual amount is the tape carriage amount or more (S37:NO).
