<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for collecting polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), obtainable of a high-purity PHA produced by microorganisms through a small number of steps from PHA-containing microbial cells without significant decrease in the molecular weight by a simple and inexpensive method suitable for commercial production. <P>SOLUTION: Steps for collecting polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) produced by microorganisms from within microbial cells include: a step (a) of subjecting an aqueous suspension of polyhydroxyalkanoate-containing microbial cells to an enzymatic treatment by adding an alkali and/or surfactant to the aqueous suspension: a step (b) of subjecting the enzymatic-treated liquid to a physical crushing treatment by adding the alkali and/or surfactant to the enzymatic-treated liquid to crush the cells and solubilize or emulsify cell substances other than PHA in the cells; and a step of separating PHA from the suspension.
