<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard film for a cutting tool which film combines a superior wear resistance and deposition resistance. <P>SOLUTION: A hard film 20 used to coat the surface of a cutting tool, such as an end mill 10 is a single-layer film made of a nitride or carbonitride expressed as Ti<SB POS="POST">a</SB>Cr<SB POS="POST">b</SB>Al<SB POS="POST">c</SB>Mo<SB POS="POST">1-a-b-c</SB>, where an atomic ratio (a) is ≥0.2 and ≤0.7, b is ≥0.01 and ≤0.2, c is ≥0.01 and ≤0.2, and 1-a-b-c is ≥0.1. The total film thickness is ≥0.2 μm and ≤10.0 μm. Because of containing Mo, an Mo oxide is formed on its surface, which makes the film show superior deposition resistance and high hardness.
