In a method of manufacturing decorative panels, a base 1 is formed by a plane rigid base 2 having a peripheral projecting edge 3 and has applied to it a fluid plastics layer 4 which after vulcanization gives a mirror-like surface. A circular stripe 5 of adhesive material is disposed on the layer 4. A support 6 comprises a frame 7 having a plane front surface and a peripheral hoop 8 projecting from its rear. The support 6 has its front surface placed on the base 1 and is immediately secured thereto by the adhesive stripe 5 so that the support takes on the form of a mould. The mould has poured into it consecutive layers 11 of transparent plastics alternating after polymerization of each such layer with ornamental items 12 such as shells, a final opaque plastics layer 13 being applied to serve as a base for the preceding layers. The support, now a decorative panel, is then separated from the base and a final polishing treatment is given for the external finish of the panel. The base is then used to make further panels. A porous protective edging 9 made of agglomerated material may be secured to the inside of the hoop 8, the inner face of the edging 9 being bevelled. The hoop and frame may be made of a good quality timber such as mahogany. The transparent plastics may be a polyester. The rearward part of the support e.g. the edging 9 may be formed with recesses communicating with the internal space of the support, an appropriate strip of material being positioned to stop such communication, whereafter moulding is effected, and after removal from the mould the strip may or may not be withdrawn or be replaced by another appropriate strip, the object being that the recesses can receive appropriate light. sources adapted to illuminate, either directly or through the strip, the plastics layers 11 and the ornamental items 12. The panels are suitable for the construction of cupboard doors or items such as bars, headboards for beds, wall and roof linings, table leaves. In an alternative method of preparing the decorative panels, the base is dispensed with.</p> |
