This technology concerns an image processing device and method able to improve encoding efficiency. By comparing the size of the current region that is subject to intra prediction processing performed with respect to an image to be encoded for each predetermined region with the sizes of the already processed regions for which intra processing was carried out prior in time to that of the current region, the already processed region that belongs to the same group as the current region if the regions are classified according to size is identified. The prediction mode of the already processed region that was identified as belonging to the same group as the current region as the result of the comparison is used to determine the prediction value of the prediction mode of the current region, the determined prediction value of the prediction mode is used to perform intra prediction, a prediction image is generated, and the generated prediction image is used to encode the image. This technology can be applied, for example, to an image processing device. |
