<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator having a light intensity detection electrode on an output optical waveguide, which can suppress leak current. <P>SOLUTION: The Mach-Zehnder optical modulator in which two light guides 32a, 32b are disposed in two output optical waveguides 38a, 38b via a multiplexing/demultiplexing portion 34 includes: two arm electrodes 40, 42 disposed on each of the two light guides 32a, 32b; light intensity detection electrodes 44 which are disposed on each of the output optical waveguides 38a, 38b and to which a voltage higher than that of the arm electrodes 40, 42 is applied; and a leak suppression electrode 60 which is disposed in a waveguide between the arm electrodes 40, 42 and the light intensity detection electrodes 44 and to which a voltage higher than the voltage applied to the arm electrodes 40, 42 is applied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
