Provided is a liquid crystal composition that satisfies at least one property and has the appropriate balance between two properties selected from a high maximum temperature of the nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of the nematic phase, a low viscosity, an appropriate optical anisotropy, a large dielectric anisotropy, a large specific resistance, high stability with respect to UV rays, and high stability with respect to heat. Also provided is an AM element having a short response time, a high voltage retention rate, a high contrast ratio, long life, and the like. The liquid crystal composition contains a predetermined tricyclic compound having a large dielectric anisotropy as a first component and a predetermined bicyclic compound having a low viscosity as a second component, optionally contains a predetermined compound having a high maximum temperature or large dielectric anisotropy as a third component and a predetermined compound having a high maximum temperature or low viscosity as a fourth component, and has a nematic phase. The liquid crystal display element comprises this composition. |
