<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting unit capable of improving the luminance of illumination light, and to provide a projection type display device and a direct-view type display device having the lighting unit. <P>SOLUTION: An illumination optical system includes one or more light sources (light sources 10A, 10B, 10C and 10D) each including a solid-state light-emitting device 11 that emits light from a light emission region comprising one or a plurality of dot-like light-emitting spots, or one or a plurality of non-dot-like light-emitting spots. The solid-state light-emitting device 11 comprises a single chip 11A that emits light of a prescribed wavelength range, or a plurality of chips 11A that emit light of the same wavelength range or a mutually different wavelength range. The three or more light-emitting spots 11B are provided as the whole of the plurality of light sources so as to emit light of two or more mutually different wavelength ranges.
