The device (1) has an electric machine (4) e.g. four-quadrant electric machine, connected to a turbine (5). A compressor (6) is connected to an air line (7) of a burner (2). The electric machine, turbine and/or the compressor are arranged on a common shaft (11). A heat exchanger (3) is connected to an exhaust line (12) of the burner, where the heat exchanger comprises a bypass (14). The electric machine is operated by a motor during startup of the device, where electric power generated by the electric machine is supplied to a load. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a power supply device.
