The method involves connecting a burner (3) to an infrared radiation detector (10) on a side that faces away from a furnace chamber of an arc furnace. Temperature is measured during operation of the burner based on infrared radiation reflected in direction of the detector. The temperature is correlated with a flame length (d) of a flame (3a) of the burner and utilized for forming a control signal for dynamically controlling a burner integrated unit, where the flame length is proportional to a distance between a charge material (2) in the chamber and the burner. An independent claim is also included for a device for dynamic control of a unit of a burner of an electric arc furnace.
