<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately display an image plane even in a case where the image plane is projected with a ceiling surface as a screen, when automatically correcting a trapezoidal distortion correction. <P>SOLUTION: An image plane is projected onto a screen, and also the projecting angle of a projection unit provided so as to able to alter the projecting angle vertically is detected. The trapezoidal distortion of the image plane is corrected according to this projecting angle. At this time, the amount of trapezoidal distortion is altered according to the projecting angle. Based on the projecting angle, a projection form is determined from among a wall surface upward projection, a ceiling surface projection, a wall surface downward projection, and a floor surface projection. According to the projection form, the correction direction of the trapezoidal distortion is altered. Specifically, in a case of the wall surface upward projection and floor surface projection, a correction is made to compress the upper side of the image plane with a correction coefficient plus.
