The invention comprises carbocyclic peroxycarboxylic acids containing an o-carboxy group, and alkali metal or ammonium salts thereof, excluding monoperphthalic acid (I), and a method for making them including I, by reacting the corresponding anhydride with a peroxidizing agent in presence of an alkali metal or ammonium cation, in an organic medium in which the peroxy-acid salt is insoluble, separating the salt and optionally acidifying it to obtain the peroxy-acid. Specified products are 3- and 4-chloro-or -nitro-monoperphthalic acids; tetrachlor-, 4-carboxy- and 4,5-dicarboxy-mono-perphthalic acids; 1,4-diperpyromellitic acid; hexahydromonoperphthalic acid; 4- and 5-chloro-and 4,5-dichloro- and -dibromo-tetrahydromonoperphthalic acids; 4,5-dibromo-3,6-endomethylenehexahydromonoperphthalic acid.
