983,954. Electric batteries. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1962 [Feb. 8, 1961], No. 3506/62. Heading H1B. A sea water battery has bipolar plates arranged in a casing 1 with removable covers 4, 6 to allow sea water to flow passed the plates when in use, and the invention is concerned with spacing the edges of the electrodes. To this end the plates which are of one polarity and carry an electrolyte layer of the opposite polarity, have a marginal portion 42 deformed into peripherally spaced undulations with insulating material 40 between adjacent plates which otherwise touch each other to prevent the plates from buckling. In addition, other spacers, preferably balls 34 (see Specification 983,955) are embedded in the layer 28. The plates are of magnesium and the layers of silver chloride with a silver foil interposed. |
