A refuse vehicle has a body 2 and a canopy 4 pivoted thereto at 10 and connected by cables 12 so that on tipping to empty the body the canopy is swung clear. The canopy 4 has a fixed screen 6 defining a loading hopper in which a packing plate 30 is reciprocated continuously by a ram 38 and is guided by links 34 pivoted at 36 to the canopy. A rear screen 28 and a metal apron 32 fixed at its forward end to the plate 30 prevent refuse from falling behind the plate while the overlapping of the side walls 24, 26 of the canopy prevent spillage in this direction. Slide blocks 44 together with the arms 34 guide the plate 30 to move at substantially the same angle throughout its packing movement. In the modification of Fig. 5 only a single link 60 on each side is provided and movement is guided by blocks 66 running in channels 68 while a scraper 69 engages the floor 31. The rear screen has a fixed part 28a and a movable part 28b pivoted at 72 and having a scraper 70 resiliently engaging the apron. In both embodiments means such as forks or pressure pads moving in synchronism with the plate 30 and sometimes responsive to the packing pressure exerted may act as secondary compression means also preventing the refuse falling back. |
