The method involves determination of duration by activation of current flow by the heat element up till an interruption of the current flow by the heat element. A cause of malfunction (U1) is determined when the determined duration (300) has a value, which lied in a time interval (Z1). Another cause of malfunctioning (U2) is determined when the determined duration has a value, which lies in another time interval (Z2) different from the former time interval. An independent claim is also included for a steamer.
