In producing knitwear on a two-bed, e.g. cylinder and dial, circular knitting machine, knitting on one bed in respect of a portion of the knitwear is discontinued in one revolution of the machine in N operations (N > 1 e.g. 2) in which 1/N of the loops concerned are transferred during each operation. A double welt, made by knitting one layer on each needle bed, is completed by two operations, firstly the loops on needles 1, 3, 5. . . 19, Fig. 1 bed 2 are transferred to the corresponding needles of bed R and then the loops on needles 2, 4, 6... 20 of bed Z are transferred to their corresponding of bed R. Fabric may be produced having stripes C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> and F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, F<SP>3</SP> of ribbing and areas B of plain knitting, the transition from ribbing to plain knitting taking place as described in relation to the double welt. The selection of transfer needles may be effected by providing long and short needles, needles with long and short butts, pattern wheels or jacquard attachments. As shown, a cylinder and dial knitting machine has transfer cam boxes T 1 , T 2 with tracks K 1 , K 2 to engage, the butts N 1 of needle jacks N which have not been turned inwardly by a pattern drum M and thus to lift the jacks and hence the needles into their transfer position. The dial cams are arranged to project the needles sufficiently at points R 103 , R 105 to take up the loops from the transfer needles of the cylinder, selection of transfer needles may be as described in Specification 809,157.</p> |
