An anion-exchange resin containing tertiary amino groups, viz.: <FORM:0996871/C3/1> where R1 is alkyl, aralkyl or aryl and R2 is -(CH2)n1- or -C2H4(XC2H4)n2-, where n1 is 2-6, n2 is 1-3 and X is a divalent atom or radical of two atoms, e.g. -O- or -NH-, and the nitrogen atom is attached to the resin matrix by its free valence. R1 may be methyl, benzyl or phenyl. The resin may be prepared by copolymerizing styrene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or divinyl benzene in suspension to give beads which are then swollen with ethylene dichloride, chloromethylated with aluminium chloride and chloromethyl ether and animated with phenyl- or methyl-ethanolamine or CH3NH.C2H4-(O-C2H4)n-OH, i.e. the reaction product of methyl ethanolamine and ethylene oxide. The resin may be used, e.g. in chloride form, to demineralize water containing organic matter. |
