Improvements to digital media systems are disclosed. The improvements include methods of linking from video or audio content represented by plural-bit values to a network resource. Methods are provided for receiving video or audio content, analyzing the plural-bit values to derive identification information, linking to the network resource having data related to the video or audio content, and presenting the data related to the video or audio content to the human viewer. Applications include enhanced-security financial transactions, counterfeit resistant identification cards, fraud deterrent systems for cellular telephony, covert modem channels in video transmission, photo duplication kiosks with automatic copyright detection, and hotlinked image objects (e.g. with embedded URLs) for use on the internet.
