A circular knit stocking has a rotary knit leg portion a reciprocatory knit heel portion and a rotary knit foot portion, all of which are knit on at least two feeds and have continuous knit junctions between adjacent poritions; the heel portion has successively increasing numbers of wales in its causes followed by successively decreasing numbers of wales from its junction with the leg portion forward to junction with the foot portion. The leg portion of the stocking is formed by two feed rotary knitting and during the formation of the final course of this knitting all the needles except the short butt needles are raised by a radially movable cam 58 to the inactive level. On the first reverse stroke at the formation of the heel two needles are dropped by the picker 72 to join the short butt needles and the first short butt needle is raised by the picker 70 to the inactive level. Similarly on the forward stroke two needles are picked down by the picker 72 and one is picked up by the picker 68. Upward picking tubes place of the first needle of the active group and the needles picked down join the trailing end of the active group from the inactive group. When sufficient wales have been added to widen the fabric the picker 72 is removed and upward picking only takes place. When the heel pouch has been formed the cam 80 drops the inactive needles to the active level and rotary knitting tubes place on all needles.
