An automobile bonnet 101 adapted to be mounted on an automobile body 102 has a hinge comprising a one-piece rod 103 including a straight mounting portion 104 adjustably secured by anchoring means 105 to the bonnet at a distance from the edge thereof, an intermediate swan-neck portion 115 extending in the same vertical plane as the straight mounting portion, and a straight bearing portion 108 at right angles to this plane and journalled in bearing means 111 adapted to be attached to the automobile body at a distance from the edge of the body. The straight bearing portion may be provided with a parallel doubled-back extension 117 giving a more secure anchorage to the bonnet, or in another form (Fig. 9, not shown) the rod is composed of two substantially identical parallel branches each having a straight mounting portion and a swan-neck portion and being coupled by a central straight bearing portion. A counterbalancing tension spring 116 adapted to be secured at one end to the automobile body and anchored at the other end in any eyelet 114 in an extension 113 of the rod may be provided. In a further embodiment (Fig. 11, not shown) the straight bearing portion has a straight extension surrounded by a coiled torsion spring one end of which is anchored to the end of the extension and the other end of which is secured to the bearing means adapted to be attached to the body. A shock-absorbing rubber stop may be attached to the body to abut the swan-neck as the bonnet reaches the fully open position. |
