A sealing ring 5 for a pipe coupling comprises an elastomer core 27 wrapped in a covering of elastomer impregnated woven glass, asbestos, polytetrafluoroethylene or other heat-stable fabric 28, the ring being four-sided in crosssection with two opposite sides convex and the other two concave. The fabric is impregnated with a high temperature elastomer, e.g. silicone rubber loaded with iron oxide, before being wrapped around the core 27 of silicone rubber. The confronting ends of tubes 1 are bridged by a sleeve 2 having at each end a channel 4 housing a sealing ring 5 in sealing engagement with one of the tubes. Axial separation of the tubes is restricted by tension cables 10 engaged by ferrules 11 at their ends in key slots 9 in flanges 6 secured to the tubes. Each ferrule 11 has outer and inner knobs 12 and 13 respectively separated by a shank 14 retained in the smaller portion of the key slot by a locking wire 15. In a modification, Figs. 11 and 12, in which the sleeve 16 is in halves connected by bolts 22 and sealed by an element 23 similar to the ring 5, the cables 10 are omitted and beads 27 on the ends of the tubes 1 prevent their withdrawal past the rings 5. |
