A metallographic sample-carrying device for use in a polishing machine comprises a cylindrical body 1 having a plurality of recesses 3 for the samples 7 arranged around a central bore 2, each recess having a pair of screw spindles 6 spaced 120 degrees from each other and a slot 4 connecting the recess with the bore, and a chuck member 8 adapted to be connected to the guide member 16 of the polishing machine, the chuck member having grooves 9 in each of which is a spring leaf 10 or other means for applying pressure to a sample in a recess and pressing it into frictional engagement with the screw spindles. The chuck member is releasably secured in the body 1 by a spring-pressed locking ball 11 engaging a groove in the chuck member. The device is for use in a nuclear laboratory and to load the device, the chuck member is removed from the body which is laid upon a plate having shallow recesses corresponding to those in the body so that when samples are loaded in the body, they extend a slight distance therefrom. The chuck member is then pressed into the body so that the springs 10 engage and press the samples against the screw spindles 6, the chuck being retained in the body by the locking ball 10. The assembly is then placed in the polishing machine the guide member 16 of which is engaged in a recess in the chuck member; the guide member has a ball-and-socket type connection with the chuck member. After polishing, the guide member is pressed out of the body to release the samples.
