In a mechanical device, at least one of two sliding components is made of hard porous sintered material, the surface pores of which are impregnated with a metal or metal alloy for lubricating the parts which move relative to one another. The material, which is impregnated into the pores, may be a metal such as tin, zinc, aluminium, copper, lead, gold, silver, indium or an alloy thereof. The sintered material may be a heavy metal carbide, such as tungsten carbide, or a refractory material containing alumina. The melting-point of the impregnated metal may be close to the operating temperature of the device.
