A driver assistance system 110 has a front camera 112 in a vehicle. A method comprises the following steps: taking a picture of an area 116 situated ahead of the vehicle 100 with the front camera 112; evaluating the picture for the presence of a stop line 108; and selective triggering, based on the evaluation, of an automatic reaction of the driver assistance system 110 for precisely targeted stopping at the stop line 108. The distance to the stop line may be calculated. The camera may be activated or the picture evaluated only if certain conditions are met e.g. vehicle velocity or output of engine below a threshold, a certain gear engaged, an indicator set. The picture may also be evaluated for the presence of a stop sign, or a red or amber traffic light. The camera may be part of an existing adaptive cruise control system, or parking assistant. |
