An on board inert gas generation system receives cabin air, or air from another relatively low pressure source, passing a portion thereof through an energy recovery turbine (12) to ambient to extract power which is used to provide all, or part of, the energy required to drive a positive displacement compressor (20) to compress another portion of cabin air to increase the pressure thereof to be suitable for supply to an air separation module (24). The compressed air is then cooled (22) and supplied to the air separation module (24), to generate nitrogen-enriched air for inerting purposes. The cabin air may be used as cooling air for the heating pass of a heat exchanger (22) which extracts heat from the compressed cabin air prior to supply to the air separation module (24). The energy recovery turbine (12) may drive a positive displacement compressor (30) directly, or it may drive a generator (26) whose power is used, optionally in conjunction with power from the aircraft power supply, to drive an electric motor (30) which drives the positive displacement compressor (20). |
