<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device that suppresses rapid load change of an image carrier belt despite the drive of a transfer roller, when a transfer material approaches a transfer nip. <P>SOLUTION: A transfer device includes: a transfer material presence detection part that detects the presence of a transfer material in a secondary transfer nip; a secondary transfer roller drive motor; and a controller that controls the speed of the secondary transfer roller drive motor.
