This high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with a light emitting tube having a substantially ellipsoid shaped light emitting part and sealed parts which extend to both sides of the light emitting part and which seal the proximal ends of electrodes. The amount of mercury enclosed in the light emitting tube is within a range of 0.2 - 0.4 [mg/mm3], and the rated lamp power is within a range of greater than 355 [W] to 600 [W]. Letting P [W] be the rated lamp power, D [mm] the inside diameter of a light emitting part (104) at the middle point between a pair of electrodes (101), and X [mm] the thickness of the light emitting part (104) at the middle point between the pair of electrodes (101), the relations 5.4 = D = 5.8 and 3.1 = X = D - 2.3 are satisfied when 355 < P = 380, 5.8 = D = 6.2 and 3.1 = X = D - 2.7 when 380 < P = 450, and 6.2 = D = 6.6 and 3.1 = X = D - 3.3 when 450 < P = 600.
